Kitchen Time Savers
20May08
- The best advice ever given to me about saving time in the kitchen was to “clean as you go”. Not only does this save time after cooking, but also makes the cooking easier because the surfaces are not so cluttered.
- On the inside of one of your cupboards sticky tape a sheet which lists all the common kitchen conversions. I’m a bad one for this… I spend ages trying to find a cook book which has them included and it takes forever!
- If entertaining, cook something that you have made in the past. Something that you are comfortable with. Also, something which should not take you away from your guests.
- Make sure the kitchen is clean before you sit down to dinner. This way, when dinner is finished all it takes is washing a few plates and cutlery and then you can relax. I find it so disheartening finishing eating a lovely meal to then find the kitchen a mess.
- Keep important ingredients handy. Instead of taking the time to make a stock, why not have one pre-made and frozen in an icecube tray. When the time comes you can use as many cubes as needed. This can be done in advance with any herb also (to save time chopping), just make sure to add a little water.

Do you use a garbage bowl? I have a Rachael Ray one, but I just used a plain bowl before that. My husband thinks it is unnecessary but I think it’s a huge time saver, especially if I’m baking or making something complicated.
